Sinopsis:
This book explains clearly the importance of character education for Muslim students. In this discussion, the importance of cultivating regiosity, perseverance, motivation to learn, discipline, patience in the learning process and learning without age limits (Long life education/learning throughout life) is discussed. The author convinces readers that the formation of good character for children is a necessity and this can be formed from the smallest madrasah, namely the family. The family has an important role in building a child’s character. This character formation can begin by teaching children about knowing the good, feeling the good, and doing the good. This means that children are not just robots who must be ready to do whatever their parents ask them to do. Through this step, children will be taught to know the good (understand good character), feel the good (hone their feelings and awareness to be sensitive to good things) and do the good (implement what they understand and feel is something good ). Character education is very important because it will become the basis for children’s behavior in the future so that they will not be easily affected by various negative effects of developments over time.
These three steps in forming children’s character cannot be separated from the role of parents in implementing aspects of character education. These aspects are example, why, habituation, system, guidance, and prayer. Parents must be good role models/examples for children, not just by ordering children to do this and that but displaying good character for children to emulate. Why is defined as the provisions that must be given to children to answer the question “why” they must carry out an action that is believed to be good. After children can observe good behavior from their parents and know the reasons why it is good, children must be accustomed to continuing to carry out these actions so that good character is formed. This is supported by the formation of a system within the family which will always be under the child’s personal control to always raise awareness about the importance of maintaining the continuity of good character. Guidance is also needed when children make mistakes or experience confusion so that parents can always ensure that their children are on the right track. The final and most important aspect is the prayer of parents, especially mothers, to ask Allah so that the good character that has been instilled in their children can always be maintained.
To achieve several steps and aspects, the author offers archery activities as a means to achieve these goals. As the words of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Archery is the best activity after swimming and horse riding and the Prophet advised parents to teach their children archery. Archery has many benefits for children, including spiritual, health, intelligence, entertainment, formation of thought patterns, self-control, mental strengthening, increasing self-confidence, developing a sense of achievement, setting goals and having a sense of greatness in children. Good character can be formed in children because archery teaches children four main attitudes which are indicators of good character, namely calm, focus, brave and win. Through archery activities, children are taught to develop a great mentality through these attitudes and this activity can last from school to adulthood. The author also explains various negative impacts that might arise if children do not have a calm, focused, brave and winning attitude within themselves. Apart from that, archery has also been proven to be able to improve the behavior patterns of children who are hyperactive, introverted, lack self- confidence, lack focus, lack discipline, and are unable to understand lessons at school. Children who join the archery club are not only able to overcome these problems but also excel well at school and in the field of archery itself, making their parents proud. This is proven by testimonials from parents and coaches of children who have these problems.
